Since its initial eruptions on October 25th, Indonesia's Mount Merapi continues to spew hot gases and ash as far as 5,000 meters into the atmosphere, wreaking havoc on surrounding villages and farms, and disrupting air travel - and more than 140 people have been killed by the eruptions over the past two weeks. Hundreds of thousands of residents have been displaced, many of them living in temporary shelters until the Indonesian government reduces the existing 20 km "safe zone", and allows them and their livestock to return. An Actor with Masked mistakenly Shot Dead

Perhaps because of very good in the act, a Filipino citizen does not know that an actor is performing in his village. As a result, these actors have been killed, hit by a shot because the masked killer mistakenly perceived as members of the herd.

CNN news reported that this incident occurred in a village in Cebu, central Philippines, when a British company was producing a film titled "Going Somewhere".

Actor Kirk Abella, 32, is required to act as a masked robber with a motorcycle. Abella also brought a toy gun to support his role.

Eddie Cuizon, 52, a security guard in the village, said he was not informed in advance about a movie being filmed in the area.

Parian district police chief, Alexis Relado, said that Cuizon shot Abella when this Filipino veteran actor is trying to escape. In fact, according to Relado, Abella was in acting.

Cuizon said that he just got up and did not realize what was happening. He is the middle to tighten oversight of the village following a number of reports gunmen in the area. Most murders in the streets of the Philippines conducted by masked riders.

1. Walter Kellner

In 1979, Germany magazine - Das Besteran - held a writing contest. The authors must send the unusual story, but should be based on a true story.

The winner, Walter Kellner of Munich, eventually won the contest and the story published.
He wrote about accident when he flew a Cessna 421 between Sardinia and Sicily. The plane experienced a problem at sea, landing on the water, he finally floated with emergency floats for a long time before finally rescued.

This story was accidentally read by an Austrian citizen, whose name was also Walter Kellner, who accused the German Kellner had plagiarized the story. Austrian Kellner said that he flew a Cessna 421 over the same sea, experienced engine trouble, and finally had landed in Sardinia. So basically, it's the same story, but with a different ending.

In the 19th century, the famous horror writer, Egdar Allan Poe, wrote a book called 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym'.

The book tells of four people who survived the accident at sea, they were on the ship on the open sea for days before they finally decided to kill and eat the cabin officer named Richard Parker.

Several years later, in 1884, a ship, Mignonette, sank. The survivor only 4 people, who are in a small boat for days. Then known, the more senior crew members, kill and eat the cabin staff.

In 1858, Robert Fallon was shot dead by his poker mate.

Newly Found Species, Monkey with The Nose Facing Upward

Species of unknown type is usually very difficult to trace. The researchers now are looking for a new primate species in northern Myanmar.

But the researchers are convinced by the local population that rare monkeys are not hard to find. They just have to wait until it rains.

This new species, previously known as a kind of pug-nosed monkey named Rhinopithecus Stykeri, have a nose that facing upward, thus making the animal sneezed loudly when rain falls.

The monkey is about 55 cm long with a tail length of 78 cm, pink-faced, black-haired and mustachioed white.

The locals call these monkeys as 'Myuk Na Tok Te' or 'Mey Nwoah', both meaning 'monkey with nose upwards'.The monkeys live in separate areas with other species, bordered with two rivers.
The discovery of these animals immediately received status as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Definition: Hypnosis is one branch of magic that used to play with the human subconscious. Once a person enters his subconscious, we can embed certain suggestions in their minds, and make them do things that we ordered.

You Should Know:

Hypnosis (especially "extreme Hypnotist" as is often done by Romi Rafael) will only be successful if the object (volunteers) willing to be hypnotized.
Nature of the human mind is divided into two, namely conscious mind and the subconscious (unconscious mind). The purpose of hypnosis is to make the volunteers are in their subconscious. The situation after the volunteers do various things in the subconscious influence is called "trans".

The Qeswachaka hanging bridge, of Cuzco, Chile, is handwoven every year, from a local grass called Qoya.

Located approximately 100 km from Cuzco, Qeswachaka bridge was once part of a network of bridges, built in the time of the Inca empire, but is now the only one of its kind, in the world. Spanning 120 feet over the Apurimac river, at around 13,000 feet above water, Qeswachaka (also spelled Q’eswachaka or Keswachaka) is built using the ancient Qhapaq nan technique, used by the Inca people.

Qhapaq nan bridges were built from grass, and were wide enough for only one person to pass, at a time. In ancient times these bridges were constantly under surveillance and everyone crossing them was monitored. When Pizzaro began his march for Cuzco, Qeswachaka was destroyed, to slow his advance, but was reconstructed, many years later.

Made from a local herb, known as Qoya, the fibers of Qeswachaka bridge deteriorate rapidly, and local communities have to reconstruct the bridge every year. Around 1,000 men and women, from various Andean communities gather at Qeswachaka bridge, every second week of June, for the rebuilding ceremony. Long blade of Qoya grass are woven into six long cables, which are bound and secured by eucalyptus trunks, buried at each end of the bridge.

It’s not that building a more modern bridge would be impossible, but this is a way for the Andean people to celebrate and honor their Inca ancestors, and keep their centuries old traditions alive.

The green glow was produced by sea fire worms to attract the opposite sex in mating rituals. The findings were based on the research scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, USA.

The results, published in Science Daily reveals that sea fire worms have the ability to produce bioluminescence light.

This ability was used to attract the opposite sex in mating season. Researchers of Marine biology Dimitri Deheyn and Michael Latz, reveals that worms also use light as a means of defense.

The Research that published in the latest Invertebrate Biology journal last week provides in-depth information about the functions of bioluminescence in fire worm. This result lead scientists closer to identifying the molecular basis of light phase.

"This is one step forward in understanding the biology of bioluminescence on fire worms. If we understand how to keep the lights remain stable in the long term, it will open up opportunities for the use of proteins or reaction in the biomedical, bioengineering, and others," said Deheyn.

Fire worms used in these studies, Odontosyllis phosphorea, is the bottom of the ocean inhabitants that live in shallow tropical and subtropical waters. During the breeding period in the summer, called swarming, female worms glow green mucus, before release of gametes or reproductive cells.

Bright light attracts the male worms which will release their gamet into the green light. Not only male worms, the human who happened to cross the waters was also fascinated with the light playing.

Experts trace the appearance of light in Southern California, the Caribbean, and Japan, which will culminate a day or two before each phase or when the moon is a quarter. Any sightings of light begins 30 to 40 minutes after sunset and lasts for 20 to 30 minutes.

Cosmic Muffin, that’s the name of this boat. At first, it’s a real plane. It.s Howard Hughes prized Boeing B-307. Because of storm, some parts of this plane broken and cannot fly-able in 1969. 5. Dieter Dengler's Prison Camp Escape

Dieter Dengler was a German-American, American Navy pilot known for his successful escape from a prison camp during the Vietnam War in a prison in the forest. In early 1966, Dengler plane was shot down by anti aircraft fire in Laos, and he was arrested and sent to prison camps run by the Pathet Lao, a group of North Vietnamese sympathizers. Dengler has earned a reputation for an uncanny ability to escape from POW camps, ostensibly for military training, and he directly contributed to planning the prisoners to make them escape. On June 29, 1966, he and six other prisoners escaped. After a spur down three guards, Dengler fled into dense forest.

Finally, he spent 23 days in the forest and resistant to heat, insects, leeches, parasites, and starvation before rescued by American helicopters. Only one of the other prisoners, a Thailand contractor , survivors of this breakout. The others were killed or disappeared in the forest. Dengler will continue to be a successful test pilot in the following years, and until today he is credited as the only American soldier who managed to escape from a prison camp during the Vietnam War.

4. Escape From Alcatraz

In 1962, Frank Morris, Clarence and John Anglin use months to carefully planning to escape from Alcatraz prison. This trio held in the famous prison at Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, which is reserved for the toughest criminals and is considered one of the most difficult prison to escape. This people using a series of tools including a drill assembly of vacuum cleaner motors chip to dig at aging concrete and make them into a ventilation hole.

The plan was extremely complex and involved the design and fabrication of ingenious lifelike dummies, water rafts, and life preservers, fashioned from over fifty rain coats that had been acquired from other inmates - some donated and some stolen. They would also require a variety of crudely made tools to dig with, and to construct the accessories necessary for the escape. By May of 1962, Morris and the Anglins and had already dug through the cell's six-by-nine-inch vent holes, and had started work on the vent on top of the cellblock.

The Anglins inhabited adjacent cells, as did West and Morris, who also resided nearby. The inmates alternated shifts, with one working and one on lookout. They would start work at 5:30 p.m. and continue till about 9:00 p.m., just prior to the lights-out count. Meanwhile John and Clarence started fabricating the dummy heads, and even gave them the pet names of "Oink" and "Oscar." The heads were crude but lifelike, and were constructed from a homemade cement-powder mixture that included such innocuous materials as soap and toilet paper. They were decorated with flesh-tone paint from prison art kits, and human hair from the barbershop.

People were never heard from again, and most evidence suggests that they drowned in the bay, but no body has ever been found.

3. The Maze Prison Escape

One of the most violent prison, the Maze Prison break occurred in 1983, when 35 prisoners escaped after taking control of prison with violence. The Maze is intended for the paramilitary Irish Republican Army combatants and terrorists, and is regarded as one of the most inescapable prison across Europe. But after several months of planning, a group of prisoners led by IRA member Gerry Kelly and Bobby Storey master the entire cellblock by using weapons that have been smuggled into the prison.

After wounding several guards and steal their uniforms, the prisoners hijacked a car and took over a nearby guard post, but when they do not get past the main gate, the men jumped a fence and fled on foot. All told, 35 people escaped from prison, sixteen of whom were arrested again soon after twenty guards were wounded.

2. Billy Hayes' Escape From Turkish Prison

Billy Hayes was an American student who was arrested in 1970 when he tried to smuggle two pounds of hash into the aircraft in Turkey. Once caught, he was sentenced to thirty years in Turkish prisons who have hard systems. Sagmilicar Hayes worked hard in prison for five years, but he eventually transferred to a prison island in the Sea of Marmara, and here he began to seriously plan for escape. The island had no boats, but near the port and there are small fishing boats every time there is a strong storm.

Hayes spent days hiding in the bin of concrete, and when the time is right, he swam to the harbor and steal a small boat. From here, he was able to make its way to Greece, and finally half way round the world before he arrived safely back in the United States.

Hayes later wrote a book about his escape called the Midnight Express, which was adapted into a fiction film of the same name.

1. The Great Escape

For a mere planning, risk, and scale, escaped from prison will not be much more complex than the 1944 escape of 76 Allied troops from Stalag Luft III, a German prison during World War II in operation. Running away is the culmination of more than one year of work by about 600 inmates.

The men dug three tunnels (nicknamed "Tom," "Dick," and "Harry") 30 feet below the surface with plans tunneling through the main fence and came to the surface near the forest. This requires a sophisticated construction process that includes the use of wood blocks for support, a series of lights, and even an air pump to ensure the soldiers that have to dig to be able to breathe. After gathering a collection of civilian clothes and passport, on March 24, 1944, they made their escape.

Teams are organized to tunnel, make civilian clothing, forge documents, procure contraband materials, and prevent guards from discovering their work. Flight Lieutenant Hendley, an American in the RAF, is "the scrounger" who finds what the others need, from a camera to clothes and identity cards. Australian Flying Officer Louis Sedgwick, "the manufacturer," makes tools such as picks for digging and bellows for pumping air into the tunnels. Flight Lieutenant Danny Velinski and William "Willie" Dickes are "the tunnel kings" in charge of making the tunnels. Eric Ashley-Pitt of the Royal Navy devises a method of hiding bags in the prisoners' trousers and spread dirt from the tunnels over the camp, under the guards' noses. Forgery is handled by Flight Lieutenant Colin Blythe, who becomes nearly blind from intricate work by candlelight. Hendley takes it upon himself to be Blythe's guide in the escape.

The prisoners work on three tunnels simultaneously, "Tom," "Dick" and "Harry." Work on Harry and Dick is stopped so that more work can be performed on Tom. The work noise is covered by the prisoner choir led by Flt Lt Cavendish.

USAAF Captain Virgil Hilts, "The Cooler King," irritates guards with frequent escape attempts and irreverent behavior. His first attempt, conceived in the cooler, is a short tunnel with RAF Flying Officer Archibald Ives; they are caught and returned to the cooler.

While the British POWs enjoy a 4th of July celebration organized by the three Americans, the guards discover tunnel Tom. The mood drops to disappointment and hits Ives hardest. He is drawn to the barbed wire that surrounds the camp and climbs it in view of guards. Hilts runs to stop him but is too late, and Ives is machine-gunned dead near the top of the fence. The prisoners switch their efforts to Harry.

Hilts agrees to change his plan and reconnoiter outside the camp and allow himself to be recaptured. The information he brings back is used to create maps showing the nearest town and railway station.

The last part of the tunnel is completed on the night of the escape, but is 20 feet short of woods which are to provide cover. Danny nearly snaps from claustrophobia and delays those behind him, but is helped by Willie. Seventy-six escape.

After attempts to reach neutral Switzerland, Sweden, and Spain, almost all the POWs are recaptured or killed. Hendley and Blythe steal an airplane to fly over the Swiss border, but the engine fails and they crash-land. Soldiers arrive. Blythe, his eyesight damaged, stands and is shot. Hendley waves and shouts "don't shoot", and is captured as Blythe dies. Cavendish, having hitched a ride in a truck, is captured at a checkpoint, discovering another POW, Haynes, captured in his German soldier disguise.

Bartlett is recognized in a crowded railroad station by Gestapo agent Kuhn. Another escapee, Ashley-Pitt, sacrifices himself when he kills Kuhn with Kuhn's own gun, and soldiers then shoot and kill him. In the commotion, Bartlett and MacDonald slip away but they are caught while boarding a bus after MacDonald blunders by replying in English to a suspicious Gestapo agent who wishes them "Good luck". Hilts steals a motorcycle, is pursued by German soldiers, jumps a barbed wire fence but becomes entangled in another and is captured, he escapes execution as a spy by showing them the airforce label on his shirt.

Three truckloads of captured POWs go down a country road and split off in three directions. One truck, containing Bartlett, MacDonald, Cavendish, Haynes and others, stops in a field and the POWs are told to get out and "stretch their legs." They are shot dead. Fifty escapees are murdered. Hendley and nine others are returned to the camp. Von Luger is relieved of command of the prison camp and is driven away by the SS for failing to prevent the breakout.

Only three make it to safety. Danny and Willie steal a rowboat and proceed downriver to the Baltic coast, where they board a Swedish merchant ship. Sedgwick steals a bicycle, then rides hidden in a freight train boxcar to France, where he is guided by the Resistance to Spain. Hilts is brought back alone to the camp and taken to the cooler. Lieutenant Goff, one of the Americans, gets Hilts's baseball and glove and throws it to him when Hilts and his guards pass by. The guard locks him in his cell and walks away, but momentarily pauses when he hears the familiar sound of Hilts bouncing his baseball against a cell wall. The film ends with this scene, under the caption, "This picture is dedicated to the fifty."

God created all things big small and the wonderful Mother Nature has bestowed man with bounty of beautiful and magnificent creations. Snow covered mountain tops glittering as the sun rays touch the tiny crystals, the falling rivers that boldly part even the hardest rocks, the vast grasslands and tall trees swishing as the passing breeze whispers quietly , and so on, God created a perfect harmonic balance between the plants, animals, man and their surroundings But man’s quest to transform the world acc to his needs and preferences, have broken all laws of nature and the world stands at the juncture of self destruction and transience.
I am not a nature lover or a geologist studying the shifting trends of nature and nor am I some volunteer of any ‘save nature’ movement. I am a simple and a selfish human being who is worried about the future of his family as I spectate the nature being murdered by people just like me. I wont talk of global warming and melting glaciers but will give you a small glimpse of what we are doing to ourselves.
Here are few rivers which once may have been the habitat of the most beautiful aquatic life but now house our wastes. Have a close look at these ugly rivers of the world.
1. Citarum river, Indonesia

Surprised? That’s the Citarum river in West Java, Indonesia. While this river may look like garbage pool to you but is actually the main source of water for agriculture and water supply for the people. The river is heavily polluted by the human activity and has no aquatic life breathing beneath the floating wastes. In December 2008, the Asian Development Bank approved a $500 million loan for cleaning upthe river but as we see it will take years to get back the dead river back to life.
2. Yamuna River, India

Yamuna the largest tributary river of the Ganges is one of the most polluted rivers in the world where 58% of the waste from the Indian capital New Delhi is dumped intothe river . Its very surprising to note that a total of Rs 1,700 crore has been spent on cleaning Yamuna as well Ganges but with all efforts turning to vain, government has finally laid its hands down.
3. Buriganga river, Bangladesh

The Buriganga River is the main river flowing beside Dhaka city, capital of Bangladesh. The biological dead river owns its plight to the 80% is untreated directly flowing intothe river and polythenes deposited beneath water .
4. Yellow river from Lanzhou, China

The Yellow River is China’s second longest river and is the main water supply for millions of people in northern China. But the river with primarily Lanzhou which is the prime source of drinking water for the two million local residences, is heavily polluted with oil spills taking place every now and then due to industrial contamination.

The waters contain toxic chemicals such as chromium, cadmium, copper and arsenic making the water very dangerous. Despite campaigns by the local government and imposing fines, households still throw their garbage, and factories release their effluents intothe river resulting in highly contaminated water.

Ganga is the most sacred river for Hindus that emerges from gangotri glacier. An estimated 2,000,000 people ritually bathe daily inthe river, inspite of being unsafe as chemical wastes, sewage and corpses remains float fearlessly across the water body.

The Songhua is a river in Northeast China, and is the largest tributary of the Heilong River. In November 2005, the river was contaminated with benzene, that lead to a shutdown of Harbin’s water supply.
8. The Mississippi river, USA

The Mississippi River is a major economic and natural resource for the heartland of the United States. The river drains nearly 40% of the continental United States, including its central farm lands and carries an estimated 1.5 million metric tons of nitrogen pollution into the Gulf of Mexico each year.
9. The Sarno river, Italy

The Sarno is a stream that passes through Pompeii to the south of the city of Naples. It is considered the most polluted river in Europe. The situation is aggravated by large-scale dumping of untreated agricultural and industrial waste into the river. The polluted basin waters flowing into the Bay of Naples also increase the sea water contamination.

The King River is arguably Australia’s most polluted river that suffers severe acidic condition related to mining operations.. About 1.5 million tonnes of sulfidic tailings enteredthe river system each year up to 1995 with total of more than 100 million tonnes until date.
This is just the end of my list of ten rivers that look ugly and are dangerous to humans around them. There are hundreds more like them lying lifeless with plastics and toxics floating above the dead water creatures and plants. We all are educated and showing ignorance towards the matter is not a wise behaviour we all know. But still we stay mumm and are happy with mineral water bottles and our water purifiers at our homes. I do not ask you to think about the world but sit and ponder about your future. How far you can convince yourself after watching the plight that the rivers have met today, that you have a safe tomorrow?

Now, government plan to build a museum to remind people about event that kills about 2,993 people, and thousands people wounded. In this museum, visitor can see the the 9/11 wreckage, story and photos about that hijacking incident.

How many times have you watched a movie where the hero is sucked down into a pit of quicksand, only to be saved at the last minute by grabbing a nearby tree branch and pulling himself out? If you believed what you saw in movies, you might think that quicksand is a living creature that can suck you down into a bottomless pit, never to be heard from again. But no -- the actual properties of quicksand are not quite those portrayed in the movies.

With quicksand, the more you struggle in it the faster you will sink. If you just relax, your body will float in it because your body is less dense than the quicksand.

Quicksand is not quite the fearsome force of nature that you sometimes see on the big screen. In fact, quicksand is rarely deeper than a few feet. It can occur almost anywhere if the right conditions are present. Quicksand is basically just ordinary sand that has been so saturated with water that the friction between sand particles is reduced. The resulting sand is a mushy mixture of sand and water that can no longer support any weight.

If you step into quicksand, it won't suck you down. However, your movements will cause you to dig yourself deeper into it. In this article, you will learn just how quicksand forms, where it's found and how you can escape its clutches if you find yourself hip-deep in it.

What's Quicksand?

Quicksand is an interesting natural phenomenon -- it is actually solid ground that has been liquefied by asaturation of water. The "quick" refers to how easily the sand shifts when in this semiliquid state.

Quicksand is not a unique type of soil; it is usually just sand or another type of grainy soil. Quicksand is nothing more than a soupy mixture of sand and water. It can occur anywhere under the right conditions, according to Denise Dumouchelle, geologist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Quicksand is created when water saturates an area of loose sand and the ordinary sand is agitated. When the water trapped in the batch of sand can't escape, it creates liquefied soil that can no longer support weight. There are two ways in which sand can become agitated enough to create quicksand:

Flowing underground water - The force of the upward water flow opposes the force ofgravity, causing the granules of sand to be more buoyant.
Earthquakes - The force of the shaking ground can increase the pressure of shallow groundwater, which liquefies sand and silt deposits. The liquefied surface loses strength, causing buildings or other objects on that surface to sink or fall over.

Vibration tends to enhance the quickness, so what is reasonably solid initially may become soft and then quick, according to Dr. Larry Barron of the New South Wales Geological Survey.

Quicksand forms when uprising water reduces the friction
between sand particles, causing the sand to become "quick."

The vibration plus the water barrier reduces the friction between the sand particles and causes the sand to behave like a liquid. To understand quicksand, you have to understand the process of liquefaction. When soil liquefies, as with quicksand, it loses strength and behaves like a viscous liquid rather than a solid, according to the Utah Geological Survey. Liquefaction can cause buildings to sink significantly during earthquakes.

While quicksand can occur in almost any location where water is present, there are certain locations where it's more prevalent. Places where quicksand is most likely to occur include:

Riverbanks
Beaches
Lake shorelines
Near underground springs
Marshes

The next time you're at the beach, notice the difference in the sand as you stand on different parts of the beach that have varying levels of moisture. If you stand on the driest part of the beach, the sand holds you up just fine. The friction between the sand particles creates a stable surface to stand on.

If you move closer to the water, you'll notice that the sand that is moderately wet is even more tightly packed than the dry sand. A moderate amount of water creates the capillary attraction that allows sand particles to clump together. This is what allows you to build sand castles.

But beach sand could easily become quicksand if enough water were thrust up through it. If an excessive amount of water flows through the sand, it forces the sand particles apart. This separation of particles causes the ground to loosen, and any mass on the sand will begin to sink through it. In the next section, you will find out how to save yourself if you happen to fall into a pit of quicksand.

How to Escape

If you ever find yourself in a pit of quicksand, don't worry -- it's not going to swallow you whole, and it's not as hard to escape from as you might think.

The human body has a density of 62.4 pounds per cubic foot (1 g/cm³) and is able to float on water. Quicksand is denser than water -- it has a density of about 125 pounds per cubic foot (2 g/cm³) -- which means you can float more easily on quicksand than on water. The key is to not panic. Most people who drown in quicksand, or any liquid for that matter, are usually those who panic and begin flailing their arms and legs.

It may be possible to drown in quicksand if you were to fall in over your head and couldn't get your head back above the surface, although it's rare for quicksand to be that deep. Most likely, if you fall in, you will float to the surface. However, the sand-to-water ratio of quicksand can vary, causing some quicksand to be less buoyant.

"By the same token, if the quicksand were deep, as in up to your waist, it would be very difficult to extract yourself from a dense slurry, not unlike very wet concrete," said Rick Wooten, senior geologist for Engineering Geology and Geohazards for the North Carolina Geological Survey. "The weight of the quicksand would certainly make it difficult to move if you were in above your knees."

The worst thing to do is to thrash around in the sand and move your arms and legs through the mixture. You will only succeed in forcing yourself farther down into the liquid sandpit. The best thing to do is to make slow movements and bring yourself to the surface, then just lie back. You'll float to a safe level.

"When someone steps in the quicksand, their weight causes them to sink, just as they would if they stepped in a pond," Dumouchelle said. "If they struggle, they'll tend to sink. But, if they relax and try to lay on their back, they can usually float and paddle to safety."

When you try pulling your leg out of quicksand, you are working against a vacuum left behind by the movement, according to The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook. The authors of the book advise you to move as slowly as possible in order to reduce viscosity. Also, try spreading your arms and legs far apart and leaning over to increase your surface area, which should allow you to float.

While quicksand remains the hackneyed convention of bad adventure movies, there's very little to be afraid of in real life. As long as you keep a cool head in the situation, the worst result will be a shoe full of wet sand.

Let’s Make Our Own QuickSand

In this experiment, you’ll be using ordinary cornstarch to model the behavior of real quicksand and learn about the properties of this non- Newtonian mixture.

IMPORTANT - READ THIS! Ironically, the cornstarch will not stay mixed with the water indefinitely. Over time, the grains of cornstarch will separate from the water and form a solid clump at the bottom of the plastic storage bag. It is for this reason that you must not pour this mixture down the drain. It will clog the pipes and stop up the drain. Pour the mixture into a zipper-lock bag and dispose of it in the garbage.

Materials

One box of cornstarch (16 oz.)
Large mixing bowl
Cookie sheet, square cake pan, or something similar
Pitcher of water
Spoon
Gallon size zipper-lock bag
Newspaper or a plastic drip cloth to cover the floor
Water
Food Coloring

Experiment Procedure

1. Pour approximately 1/4 of the box (about 4 oz.) of cornstarch into the mixing bowl and slowly add about a half a cup of water. Stir. Sometimes it is easier to mix the cornstarch and water with your bare hands (of course, this only adds to the fun).

2. Continue adding cornstarch and water in small amounts until you get a mixture that has the consistency of honey. It may take a little work to get the consistency just right, but you will eventually end up mixing one box of cornstarch with roughly 1 to 2 cups of water. Notice that the mixture gets thicker or more viscous as you add more cornstarch.

3. Sink your hand into the bowl of “quicksand” and notice its unusual consistency. Compare what it feels like to move your hand around slowly and then very fast. You can’t move your hand around very fast! In fact, the faster you thrash around, the more like a SOLID the gooey stuff becomes. Sink you entire hand into the goo and try to grab the fluid and pull it up. That’s the sensation of sinking in quicksand!

4. Drop a plastic toy animal into the cornstarch mixture and then try to get it out. It’s pretty tough even for an experienced quicksand mixologist.

Slap Test Pour the mixture onto the cookie sheet or cake pan. Notice its unusual consistency when you are pouring it into the pan. Stir it around with your finger, first slowly and then as fast as you can. Skim you finger across the top of the glop. What do you notice? Sink you entire hand into the glop and try to grab the fluid and pull it up. That’s the sensation of sinking in quicksand!

Try to roll the fluid between your palms to make a ball. You can even hold your hand flat over the top of the pan and slap the liquid glop as hard as you can. Most people will run for cover as you get ready to slap the liquid, fearing that it will splash everywhere.

According to theory, the mixture should stay in the pan. Yeah, right! If your cornstarch water mixture inadvertently splatters everywhere, you will know to add more cornstarch. When you are finished, pour the glop into a large zipper-lock plastic bag for later use.

How does it work?

The cornstarch and water mixture acts like a solid sometimes, and a liquid at other times? Actually, this concoction is an example of a suspension - a mixture of two substances, one of which is finely divided and dispersed in the other. In the case of the cornstarch quicksand, it's a solid dispersed in a liquid.
When you punch the cornstarch quicksand, you are forcing the long starch molecules closer together. The impact of this force traps the water between the starch chains to form a semi-rigid structure. When the pressure is released, the cornstarch flows again.
All fluids have a property known as viscosity - the measurable thickness or resistance to flow in a fluid. Honey and ketchup are liquids that have a high resistance to flow. Water has a low viscosity. Newton said that viscosity is a function of temperature. So, if you heat honey, the viscosity is less than that of cold honey. The cornstarch and water mixture and quicksand are both examples of non-Newtonian fluids because their viscosity changes when stress or a force is applied.

What is Quicksand? Quicksand is nothing more than a soupy mixture of sand and water, where the sand is literally floating on water. Scientifically speaking, quicksand is actually a substance that behaves like both a solid and a liquid at the same time. This is the interesting sensation you experienced with the cornstarch and water mixture. Quicksand is just solid ground that has been liquefied by too much water, and the term "quick" refers to how easily the sand shifts when in this solid-liquid state.

Quicksand is created when water floods or saturates an area of loose sand and the sand is begins to move around. Think of quicksand as a soupy mixture of sand and water that is constantly being stirred. When the water in the sandy soil cannot escape, it creates a liquid-like soil that can no longer support any weight. If an excessive amount of water flows through the sand, it forces the sand particles apart. This separation of particles causes the ground to loosen, and any weight on the sand will begin to sink through it.

The quicksand phenomenon can be caused by an uprising of water from something like flowing underground water or even an earthquake where the sand is agitated. You are likely to find quicksand around riverbanks, lake shorelines, marshes, beaches, near underground springs or any place where an uprising of water over saturates and agitates the sand.

The next time you are standing barefoot on the beach, think about the properties of quicksand. Normally, the grains of wet sand are compressed together tightly and this firm ground easily supports your weight. The friction between grains of wet sand is strong enough to make it easy to build sand castles. However, when the sand on the beach is flooded with an excess amount of water, the agitated sand particles begin to move, separate and quickly wash away right from under your feet!

This activity is a great example of how to use a model to study something that most of us will never see in person. While the cornstarch and water mixture is not real quicksand, its behavior is strikingly similar. The use of these kinds of models are an important part of a scientist’s research into the areas of the unknown.

I like this film, beside of it’s clear picture and detail, it’s story is very touchy and full of imagination. Actually this is romantic love story between Wall-e (I say Wally) and Eve, which has it’s own characters, clearly described in this film.

I’ve search the net, and found that Wall-e film inspired this Russian man in making it’s Computer case into Wall-e character. Let’s follow his work, step-by-step and see how hard he worked, and how nice it’s result. He said it tooks 18 days to finish. Great Job.

Is Highest Paying CPC Always Appear First?

If there are multiple Google AdSense ad units on a web page, it is generally assumed that the top ad unit (the one which appears first in the HTML source code) will serve the highest paying CPC ads. Well, that may be true most of the times but not always. Let’s understand why.

But before you dive into the example below, please watch this excellent video by Dr Hal Varian, Chief Economist at Google, as he explains how an ad auction works and what factors determine the position of AdSense ads on a web page for a given keyword.

The Google AdWords system assigns a "Quality Score" to every advertiser who is participating in the ad auction and this score is determined by the quality of the advertiser’s website, the historical CTR of his ads on Google and a couple of other factors.

For instance, the Google ad system is likely to assign higher Quality Scores to Sony.com or Amazon.com for the keyword "digital cameras" than an advertiser xyz.com who is trying to promote his eBay auction on the AdSense network.

Google than computes the final rank (or ad position) of each advertiser using their respective quality scores and the maximum amount they are willing to pay for a single click (CPC).

Coming back to our original example, let’s say four advertisers are bidding in an auction to show up on a web page that is about "digital camera".

The advertiser Sony.com has been assigned a score of 8 by Google and they are ready to spend a maximum of $16 per click. Amazon has an even quality score (9) but they have specified their maximum CPC as $14 and so on.

Now the ad position (column 5) of various advertiser in an AdSense unit is determined on the basis of Ad rank (column 4) but the actual cost (or CPC) that these advertiser have to pay per click to Google is not always in that order.

As Dr Varian explains (time 05:50), the price that an advertiser has to pay (his actual CPC) is equal to the Ad Rank of the advertiser just below him divided by his own CPC bid.

So in the case of Sony, they’ll have pay 126 (the Ad Rank of Amazon) / 16 (CPC Bid of Sony) and this is equal to 7.88.

The click cost for Amazon will therefore be 120/14 = 8.57 which is more than that of Sony but the Amazon ad will still show up below the Sony ad since the Ad Rank of Sony is higher.

Google will share a fixed portion of ad revenue (or click price) with the AdSense publisher (where these ads are shown) and therefore a click on a Sony ad will fetch him less revenues even though the ad occupies the top slot.

She went on to say that she doesn’t blame Google for her addiction, but the fever in which forums and blogs promote the fact that anyone can become rich with this scheme inspired her to keep adding pages and checking her stats.

Kate, did state that she was earning a reasonable amount of money from Google Adsense, but told us she also spent a considerable amount of money on scripts, ebooks and promises of gaining all you would ever want to know about Adsense, from forum gurus claiming they had made their fortunes and where willing to share their secrets if you deposited $97 into their PayPal account.

Another publisher I spoke to told me his addiction had made him a rich man in 51 days. “I was browsing the net on October the 15th last year and came across a website that had a photo of a guy holding a Google cheque for nearly $200,000 dollars. Under the picture it stated that this was just a 1 month pay check from Google. Lights and bells went off in my head as I thought, Man, this is what I have been looking for”.

David, had been dabbling in online money making schemes for about 6 years and to date had not been very successful. But he did have 3 website’s which had 1000’s of visitors to them and after reading all he could on the subject, David placed 2 small Adsense ads on each page of his 1000 page website. “I didn’t sleep that night. Clinical symptoms at the time of presentation may include abdominal pain, abdominal mass, increased abdominal girth, distention of the abdomen, ascites (fluid in the abdomen), fever, weight loss, fatigue, anemia and digestive disturbances. Some patients complain of more non-specific symptoms for a number of months prior to a confirmed diagnosis. In a percentage of cases, peritoneal mesothelioma is found incidentally when the patient has sought help for another health problem such as gallbladder, hernia or pelvic mass.

DIAGNOSIS

As with all mesotheliomas, the diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma can be challenging. CT findings may help differentiate between the two clinical types of peritoneal mesothelioma, termed “dry” or “wet”, since their appearances are very different upon imaging. In the “dry” type, CT may reveal multiple small masses or a single dominant localized mass. There is normally little or no ascites. In the “wet” type, CT may reveal widespread small nodules, but no dominant mass. Ascites is usually present.

If fluid is present, it may be removed in a procedure called paracentesis. Unfortunately, as is the case with pleural mesothelioma, fluid analysis offers limited diagnostic value. It is normally a tissue biopsy obtained in a laproscopic exploratory that will yield a definitive diagnosis.

STAGING

There is currently no established staging system for peritoneal mesothelioma, and if the disease is staged, it is normally done in accordance with the TNM system, the most common general cancer staging system. This system refers to the status of the tumor (T), lymph nodes (N) and metastases (M). There are general categories which may also be somewhat helpful in determining stage.

The first category shows a localized lesion able to be completely resected (entirely removed). In the second category, the disease is contained within the abdominal cavity on peritoneal and organ surfaces where debulking (the removal of as much, but not all of the tumor) is possible. Category three shows disease contained within the abdominal cavity with invasion of organs such as the colon or liver. Category four shows disease extending outside the abdominal cavity.

TREATMENT

In recent years, multimodality treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma has become more common for a select patient population, since surgery alone and/or intraperitoneal chemotherapy alone have proven to be similarly ineffective. Cytoreductive (debulking) surgery involves the removal of all or nearly all visible tumor, and, depending on the physician’s choice, may be combined with Intra-Peritoneal Hyperthermic Chemotherapy (IPHC), intraperitoneal chemotherapy and/or radiation. Dr. Paul Sugarbaker has written"intraperitoneal chemotherapy gives high response rates within the abdomen because the peritoneal space to plasma barrier provides dose intensive therapy." Since it is not always possible to remove all tumors, the prognosis for long-term survival may be based on the completeness of cytoreduction as established by the following criteria:

COMPLETE CYTOREDUCTION:

CC-0 No peritoneal seeding is visualized within the operative fields.

CC-1 Nodules of less than 2.5 cm persist after cytoreduction. Nodules of this size are thought to be penetrable by intracavitary chemotherapy, therefore cytoreduction is termed complete.

IMCOMPLETE CYTOREDUCTION:

CC-2 Nodules of between 2.5 and 5 cm persist after cytoreduction.

CC-3 Nodules of greater than 5 cm or a merging of unresectable tumor nodules at any site within the abdomen or pelvis.

For patients found to have widespread disease, where surgery is not looked at as “potentially curative”, palliation of symptoms may be accomplished by debulking. Since peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare malignancy, specialized treatments should be conducted by doctors familiar with the disease.

Furious Didier Drogba loses the plot as Chelsea crash out of Champions League

Didier Drogba is facing a lengthy ban from Uefa competitions for repeatedly abusing the referee in the aftermath of Chelsea’s heartbreaking Champions League exit last night.

A 20-yard drive from Andrés Iniesta in the third minute of injury time took Barcelona through to the final on the away goals rule after a 1-1 draw on a cruel, combustible night at Stamford Bridge. They will play Manchester United in Rome on May 27.

The Ivory Coast striker ran from his position on the substitutes’ bench to remonstrate with Tom Henning Ovrebo, the Norwegian referee, after the final whistle, along with several of his team-mates, and was eventually booked.

In front of a huge worldwide television audience, Drogba then called the referee — who later admitted to Uefa officials that he had made mistakes — a “f***ing disgrace” on several occasions, while he also appeared to abuse Guus Hiddink as Chelsea’s interim manager and several stewards attempted to force the Ivory Coast striker off the pitch.

“I can fully understand Didier’s reaction — full of emotion, full of adrenalin,” Hiddink said. “People say he should be in control. The time a player goes beyond emotion to start hitting, that’s wrong, but I can fully understand his emotion. I will protect him.”

Chelsea’s angry players suggested that an anti-English conspiracy was behind Ovrebo’s decision to reject four penalty appeals, but their frustration is unlikely to provide sufficient mitigation for Drogba’s conduct.

An eyewitness reported that Drogba’s histrionics continued in the tunnel, where several Chelsea players are understood to have surrounded the referee while complaining that Uefa had been anxious to avoid another all-English final.

It was even claimed that Drogba slapped a wall in frustration, though there were no suggestions that he aimed any physical violence at the official.

Hiddink condemned Ovrebo’s performance in the strongest possible language for a man known as a diplomat, though he stopped short of questioning his neutrality. The Dutchman is unlikely to be mollified by the revelation two hours after the final whistle that Ovrebo admitted to the Uefa match delegate that he had made significant errors.

Of Chelsea’s four most strident penalty claims, two appeared undeniable, when Florent Malouda was pulled down by Daniel Alves in the first half and Gerard Piqué handled in the second. “Conspiracy is a very tough word and you have to prove it,” Hiddink said. “I don’t want to go with that tough word. It was said in the build-up that it would be nice to have a repetition of last year’s final, but I can only say what I see.

“I cannot say if Uefa would not like another all-English final. What I’m sure about that, in big games like this, you need top-notch referees. Players make many mistakes, coaches makes mistakes and referees can make mistakes. But if you have seen three or four situations waved away, then it’s the worst I have seen. At this moment I’d have to think a lot if I have seen worse.”

John Terry also spoke up for Drogba after protesting alongside him in the tunnel. The Chelsea captain demonstrated his sportsmanship, however, visiting the Barcelona dressing-room to offer his congratulations on a passage to the final that they barely deserved given they had only one shot on target during the entire match after falling behind in the ninth minute to a superb goal from Michael Essien.

“I’m fully behind Didier, the way he reacted,” Terry said. “You can see the passion he played with in the game and afterwards. But the fact is the referee is the one who should face the consequences, not Didier and not us by not going through.”

Piqué admitted that the ball touched his hand from Nicolas Anelka’s shot in the second half, while Pep Guardiola, the Barcelona coach, conceded that Chelsea were right to feel disappointed with the referee.

Piqué, who will face his former club in the final, said: “To be fair, the ball touched my hand. I didn’t want it to, but it did. The referee decided it wasn’t a penalty. Sometimes it’s wrong, but you have to respect the decision of the referee.”

“I can understand that Chelsea can be disappointed about the performance of the referee,” Guardiola — who saw Eric Abidal, his central defender, sent off in the 66th minute for a professional foul on Anelka — said.

“We just tried to win the game, to keep the ball and create chances. We didn’t create too many. It was difficult for us to do that, but I have a lot of faith in my team and we kept going, trying until the end.”

10. He-Man

He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. Defending the secrets of Castle Greyskull? Now my memory must be pretty bad, but what exactly were the secrets of Castle Greyskull again? I didn't think the fact that He-Man preferred guys was much of a secret at all. My favorite thing about the theme/intro is that it summarises the He-Man life story in under a minute! What does that tell you? He-Man really needed to get a life!

The He-Man theme is all about empowerment. Run outside, raise your arm in the air and scream "I have the pooooowaaahhrrrr".

9. Silverhawks

The Silverhawks were the gang given metal bodies and hawk wings to stop organized crime in the Limbo galaxy. A classic and kicking theme tune. The hawk sound effect is a nice touch. Very classy. In case you care, the guitar playing guy is country singing Col. Bluegrass, and that's no ordinary guitar! In the 29th century that's what they call a sonicguitar. Awesome.

8. The Care Bears

This theme is a classic for all the right reasons. It is down right irritating. I challenge you to listen to it 20 times in a row and not want to jam a screw driver in your ear at the end of it. It's sooooo cute I just threw up on my shoes. This theme will change your life through giving you a greater appreciation for the sounds of silence.

7. The A-Team

Just like the team themselves this theme is all balls and a worthy number 7. Sgt. Bosco Albert "B.A." Baracus seemed to have a bizarre 1980's case of tourettes. He was one crazy fool. This theme could only be better if Mr T busted some rhymes over the top of it. This one is complete with subtitles, granted, they aren't english subtitles, but they are still subtitles!

6. Thundercats

Snarf Snarf. Even in the 1980's the Thundercats had street cred. There theme proves that they were down with the biatches and ho's from the beginning. Thundercats also taught me that it's ok to have bad hair.

5. Transformers

Before Michael Bay dragged the Transformers brand through the mud, there was the original cartoon. Compulsory viewing. Any one that has seen the show knows that Transformers are so much 'more than meets the eye'. This theme tune taught me that besides that the Autobots were waging a battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decipticons, you should also never judge a book by it's cover.

Actually, I have a question... how come Megatron is as big as Optimus Prime when they are robots, but when he transforms he shrinks to the size of a gun? And another thing, if the Transformers come from outer space, why do they look like cars and stuff from Earth?

4. Walker, Texas Ranger

This theme rocks like a roundhouse kick to the balls. As you will see it features two types of music, country and western. This clip also demonstrates that more off road vehicle roll over in Texas than any other place in the world. It'll teach you everything you need to know about right and wrong, as well as workplace safety.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The original is still the best, and the theme tune slams that point home. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the heroes in a half shell, the worlds most fearsome fighting team. Ever wondered why they could never cut Shredder no slack? Actually the 'rap' theme from the live action movie was a booty shaker as well. If I was a male stripper that might just be my performance music of choice.

2. Greatest American Hero

A teacher becomes a superhero after finding an alien space suit. things turn pear shaped when he loses the instructions and struggles to control his new powers. Who would have thought those events would lead to one of the most inspirational themes of any show anywhere in the galaxy? Believe it or not, exercise your personal freedom... just don't wear a red lycra body suit!

1. Monkey

My number one is, the Monkey Theme (often referred to as Monkey Magic). How could this theme not be a classic? Look at it this way, Monkey was performed by Japanese actors in China and then dubbed into English. The show itself was such pure gold.

As for the theme, there stand no greater in history. Check out the transcript below, filled with so much wisdom...

A film poster is a poster used to advertise a film. There may be several versions for one film, with variations in regards to size, content and country of production of the poster. It usually contains an image with text, though this has evolved over time from image-free bill posters through to the highly visual digital productions of today. The text usually contains the film title in large lettering and often the names of the main actors. It may also include a tag line, the name of the director, names of characters, the release date, etc.

Use of such posters goes back to the earliest public exhibitions of film, where they began as outside placards listing the programme of (short) films to be shown inside the hall or movie theater. By the early 1900s, they began to feature illustrations of a scene from each individual film or an array of overlaid images from several scenes. Other movie posters have used artistic interpretations of a scene or even the theme of the film, represented in a wide variety of artistic styles. Movie posters are produced in a large number of sizes to meet various advertising needs.

Lobby cards

Lobby cards are like posters but smaller, usually 11" × 14" (but also 8" × 10" before 1930). Lobby cards are collected and their value depends on their age, quality and popularity. Typically issued in sets of eight, each featuring a different scene from the film. In unusual circumstances, some releases were promoted with larger (12 cards) or smaller sets (6 cards). "The Running Man" set, for example comprised of only six (6) cards, whereas the earlier classic "The Italian Job" set spanned twelve photographs. Films released by major production companies experiencing financial difficulties sometimes had no accompanying "lobby set" at all. Perhaps one of the most notable examples of this scenario would be Michael Mann's cult classic Manhunter (1986), for which no USA lobby card set was ever printed.

Teaser poster

A teaser poster is an early promotional film poster, containing a basic image or design without revealing too much information such as the plot, theme, and characters. The purpose is to incite awareness and generate hype for the film. A tagline may be included. There are some instances when teaser posters are issued long in advance before the film goes into production, although they are issued during the film development.

Character posters

For a film with an ensemble cast there may be a set of character posters, each featuring an individual character from the film. Usually it contains the name of the actor/actress, with or without the name of the character played. It may also include a tagline that reflects the quality of the character.

Made in many different sizes and versions, and released in different moments all along a movie’s life, posters immortalize in one static image the feeling and the atmosphere of a motion picture. Some posters can be dark or try to frighten the audience, others bedazzling with bright colors; some can be someway informative, while others can be fully teasing and may provide you only the date when movie will be released, even if you may not know what the movie is about.

8 Worst Tumor

Jose: the man with no face

Jose has one of the most extreme facial tumours ever seen in medical history. The 51-year-old, from Portugal, is in danger of being suffocated by it unless he undergoes drastic surgery. Unemployed, he is blind in one eye as a result of the giant weeping growth that has consumed his features; the tumour has taken over his mouth and tongue, ballooning his lips, twisting his gums and breaking his teeth off. The deep, 15cm long growth - which started as a birth mark when he was just 11 - was sparked by abnormalities in his capillaries and veins. It started to get much bigger when he hit 16 and has been expanding ever since. H e recently flew to the UK to discuss the possibility of surgery to remove part of the tumour. But because his mother was a Jehovah's Witness, he refused any surgery because his religion means he can't have blood transfusions. Doctors in London came up with a plan to remove parts of the growth bit by bit - without transfusion.

Huang Chuncai: 44 pound (20kg) tumor on his face

On 2008, a Chinese man named Huang Chuncai underwent surgery to remove a 20kg or 44 pound tumor on his face. The surgery was successful but due to the large size of the tumor, only a part of it was removed at that time. Just a few days ago, Huang Chuncai went into the operating room again to remove another part of that facial tumor. This time, it was a large 4.5kg (9.9lb) chunk of flesh from his face. The tumor was originally 23kg in total. This still leaves 17.5kg of facial tissue from this tumor on his face (1kg was removed in the first surgery and 4.5kg was removed in the second surgery). Huang Chuncai suffers from Neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder that causes growth on nerve tissues.

Huang Liqian: 33 pound (15Kg) tumor on his neck

This man from China finally had a huge tumour removed on 2007, after discovering it 17 years ago. Huang Liqian, 58, first discovered a bizarre growth on the back of his neck in 1990, but chose to ignore it. However, as the years rolled on, it continued to increase in size at a rapid pace, with the growth ballooning to 15kg. Liqian was taken to the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongging University of Medical Services in southwest China's Chongging, where he had the tumour removed.

Chen Zongtao: 154 pound (70kg) tumor on his right leg

Victim Chen Zongtao, 29, lives in a remote Chinese village and hasn't been able to afford medical help. The growth first started on his left foot when he was two years old. But it soon spread across to his right leg and engulfed it. Over the years, it has ballooned in size to weigh more than 70KG or 154 pounds. Doctors at the hospital in Changsha, central China's Hunan province, have been probing the tumor. Zongtao is said to be suffering from neurofibroma - a usually-benign tumour originating in nerves. It is not yet clear if medical teams plan to take action on the growth.

Gao An-ni: tumor in her underlip

Gao An-ni, an 8-year-old girl from the rural countryside in An Yuan county in East China's Jiangxi Province, suffers from a tumor in her underlip. An-ni was born with a tumor in her underlip, and she couldn't receive timely treatment for the poverty. On 2007, her father took her to see doctors at the Hospital affiliated with Gannan Medical College. But when doctors there told him that the operation to cure the tumor and the following cosmetic surgerymight cost a lot for the family, the father decided to bring back his daughter to their hometown.

Lai Ti Dao: 10 pound (4.5KG) tumor on her face

Vietnam's Lai Ti Dao suffered from a massive Schwannoma tumor, a benign growth that began with a small lump in her tongue but swelled over the years to a size roughly one-third her body weight. The tumor makes it difficult to eat, talk and even walk because its size throws the girl’s small frame off balance. The growth is now dangerously close to cutting off her airway. On 2008, a team of surgeons at the University of Miami had a marathon 10-hour procedure to cut away the growth, which weighted an estimated 10 pounds.

Phuon: another facial tumor, no luck

Phuong is a 27-year old who has a facial tumor that began to grow at age 7, and quickly took over his entire left face, enveloping his eye and ear, clearly keeping him from living a normal life. He has had three surgeries before, but the tumor grown back each time. Recently, no local doctors or international team visiting the area has offered to take his case, due to the risk involved with the blood loss and the need for careful post-op care. This case would be considered a difficult case and booked for a full day in the OR.

Chantal Sébire: Suffered from esthesioneuroblastoma, died through euthanasia

A retired French teacher, Chantal Sébire suffered from esthesioneuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer, and fought for the right to diethrough euthanasia. In 2000, she was diagnosed with esthesioneuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer of which only 200 cases have been reported in the past 20 years. Sébire refused any treatment at the time of her diagnosis, not wishing to take the risk of the surgery or medications. On March 19, 2008, she was found dead in her home. An autopsy conducted on March 21, 2008 concluded that she did not die of natural causes. Subsequent blood tests revealed a toxic concentration of the drug Pentobarbital, a barbiturate that is not available in French pharmacies but is used elsewhere in the world for the purpose of physician assisted suicide.

1. Mir Diamond Mine – Siberia

Mir Mine (Russian: Кимберлитовая алмазная трубка "Мир"; English: kimberlite diamond pipe "Peace") is an abandoned open pit diamond mine located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia. The mine is 525 m deep and has a diameter of 1200 m. It was the first and one of the largest diamond pipes of the USSR. Mir Mine was discovered on June 13, 1955 by Soviet geologists Yuri Khabardin, Ekaterina Elagina and V.Avdeenko during the large Amakinsky Expedition in Yakut ASSR. It was operated for almost 50 years, finally closing on April 30, 2004 while in operation, Mir Mine gave out 2 million carats annually. It takes trucks close to 2 hours to drive from the bottom to the top.

2. THE BIG HOLE

The Big Hole or Kimberley Mine, originally referred to as Colesberg Kopje is an open-pit mine in Kimberley, South Africa and claimed to be the largest hole excavated by hand. The first diamonds here were found by members of the "Red Cap Party" from Colesberg, and the ensuing scramble for claims led to the place being called New Rush, later renamed Kimberley.

From mid-July 1871 to 1914 up to 50,000 miners dug the hole with picks and shovels, yielding 2,720 kilograms (6,000 lb) of diamonds. The Big Hole has a surface of 17 hectares (42 acres) and is 463 metres (1,520 ft) wide. It was excavated to a depth of 240 metres (790 ft) but then partially infilled with debris reducing its depth to about 215 metres (710 ft) since then it has accumulated water to a level 40 metres (130 ft) below the surrounding land surface, leaving 175 metres (570 ft) of the hole beneath water. The underground Kimberley Mine was mined to a depth of 1097 metres.

There is currently an effort in progress to register the Big Hole as a World Heritage Site.

3. Bingham Canyon Mine – Utah

The Bingham Canyon Mine is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. It is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.75 miles (1.2 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (7.7 km²). According to Kennecott, it is the world's largest man-made excavation.^[3] It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper

Over its life, Bingham Canyon has proven to be one of the world's most productive mines. As of 2004, ore from the mine has yielded more than 17 million tons (15.4 Mt) of copper, 23 million ounces (715 t) of gold, 190 million ounces (5,900 t) of silver, and 850 million pounds (386 kt) of molybdenum. The gold and silver are impurities removed from the copper during refining. The value of the resources extracted from the Bingham Canyon Mine is greater than the Comstock Lode, Klondike, and California gold rush mining regions combined. Cumulatively, Bingham Canyon has produced more copper than any other mine in the USA, and is the second in the world after Chuquicamata in Chile. Mines in Chile,Indonesia, Arizona, and New Mexico now exceed Bingham Canyon's annual production rate. High molybdenum prices in 2005 made the molybdenum produced at Bingham Canyon in that year worth even more than the copper. ^[6] The value of metals produced in 2006 at Bingham Canyon was US$1.8 billion dollars.

Employing 1,400 people, 450,000 tons (408 kt) of material are removed from the mine daily. Electric shovels can carry up to 56 cubic yards (43 m³) or 98 tons (89 t) of ore in a single scoop. Ore is loaded into a fleet of 64 large dump trucks which each carry 255 tons (231 t) of ore at a time; these trucks cost about US$3 million each. There is a five mile (8 km) series of conveyors that take ore to the Copperton concentrator and flotation plant. The longest conveyor is 2.5 miles (4 km) long and passes through an existing railroad tunnel inside the mine.

4. Glory Hole – Monticello Dam

Monticello Dam was constructed between 1953 and 1957. The dam is a medium concrete-arch dam with a structural height of 304 ft (93 m) and a crest length of 1023 ft (312 m). It contains 326,000 cubic yards (249,000 m³) of concrete.

The dam impounds Putah Creek to form Lake Berryessa, the second-largest lake in California. The capacity of the reservoir is 1.602 million acre-feet (1.98 km³). Water from the reservoir is supplied mostly to the North Bay area of San Francisco.

The Monticello Dam Powerplant was built at the dam in 1983 and has three generators. The electrical power is sent mostly to the North Bay area of San Francisco.

The dam is notable for its classic, uncontrolled spillway with a rate of 48,400 cubic feet per second (1370 m³/s) and a diameter at the lip of 87 feet (22 m).

5. Diavik Diamond Mine – Canada

The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (186 miles) north of Yellowknife.^[2] It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing 8 million carats (1600 kg) of diamonds annually. The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003. It is connected by an ice road and Diavik Airport with a 5,235-foot (1,596 m) gravel runway regularly accommodating Boeing 737 jet aircraft.

The mine is owned by a joint venture between the Harry Winston Diamond Corporation and Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group. The lifespan of the mine is expected to be 16 to 22 years.

The mine consists of three kimberlite pipes associated with the Lac de Gras kimberlite field and is located on an island 20 square kilometres (8 sq mi) in Lac de Gras and is informally called East Island. It is about 220 kilometres (137 mi) south of the Arctic Circle.

In 2006 the ice road from Yellowknife to the Diavik mine, and neighboring mines, froze late and thawed early.^[1] The Diavik mine was unable to truck in all the supplies needed for the rest of 2006 before the road closed and arrangements had to be made to bring the remainder of the supplies in by air.

On July 5, 2007 a consortium of seven mining companies, including Rio Tinto, announced they are sponsoring environmental impact studies to construct a deep-water port in Bathurst Inlet.^[3]^[4] Their plans include building a 211 km (131 mi) road connecting the port to their mines. The port would serve vessels of up to 25,000 tonnes.

The Diavik mine was featured in Ice Road Truckers, a television series on The History Channel.

6. Sinkhole – Guatemala

A rupture in the underground stormwater drain system opened a huge sinkhole on February 23, killing three people and bringing down twelve houses in Guatemala City.

Teenagers Irma and David Soyos and their father, 53-year old Domingo Soyos were killed when their house collapsed into the sinkhole. Nearly a thousand people were evacuated from the San Antonio neighborhood after the collapse.

Wikinews interviewed Eric Haddox, a civil engineer who has visited the site of the sinkhole and spoken to the engineers working on fixing the drain. Mr. Haddox, who specialises in the building of earthworks, roads, water supply and sewage systems, and is working as a missionary in Guatemala, visited the site following the collapse to help in the recovery effort.

Mr. Haddox told us that the size of the hole is much smaller than the 330 feet depth originally reported and that the erosion causing the collapse is believed to have happened over a long time, and not just during the recent rains as initially suspected.

There are also concerns that a four-story building less than a metre from the edge of the hole may collapse as the earth under the building continues to be eroded.

7. Great Blue Hole – Belize

The Great Blue Hole is a large underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 100 kilometres (62 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, over 300 metres (984 ft) across and 125 metres (410 ft) deep.^[1] It was formed as a limestone cave system during the last glacial period when sea levels were much lower. As the ocean began to rise again, the caves flooded, and the roof collapsed.^[2] Believed to be the world’s largest feature of its kind, the Great Blue Hole is part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a World Heritage site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

On-shore caves of similar formation, as large collapsed sinkholes, are well known in Belize.

This site was made famous by Jacques-Yves Cousteau who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world. In 1971, he brought his ship, the Calypso, to the hole to chart its depths.^[4] Investigations by this expedition confirmed the hole's origin as typical karst limestone formations, formed before rises in sea level in at least four stages, leaving ledges at depths of 21, 49 and 91 meters (69, 161 and 299 ft). Stalactites were retrieved from submerged caves, confirming their previous formation above sea level. Some of these stalactites were also off-vertical by 10°-13° in a consistent orientation, thus indicating that there had also been some past geological shift and tilting of the underlying plateau, followed by a long period in the current plane.

This is a popular spot amongst recreational scuba divers, who are lured by the opportunity to dive in crystal clear water and meet several species of fish, including giant groupers, nurse sharks and several types of reef sharks such as the Caribbean reef shark and the Blacktip shark. Other species of sharks, like the bull shark and hammerheads, have been reported there, but are not regular sightings. Usually, dive trips to the Great Blue Hole are full-day trips, which include one dive in the Blue Hole and two further dives in nearby reefs.

10 Principles of Effective Web Design

In order to use the principles properly we first need to understand how users interact with web-sites, how they think and what are the basic patterns of users’ behavior.

How do users think?

Basically, users’ habits on the Web aren’t that different from customers’ habits in a store. Visitors glance at each new page, scan some of the text, and click on the first link that catches their interest or vaguely resembles the thing they’re looking for. In fact, there are large parts of the page they don’t even look at.

Most users search for something interesting (or useful) and clickable; as soon as some promising candidates are found, users click. If the new page doesn’t meet users’ expectations, the Back button is clicked and the search process is continued.

Users appreciate quality and credibility. If a page provides users with high-quality content, they are willing to compromise the content with advertisements and the design of the site. This is the reason why not-that-well-designed web-sites with high-quality content gain a lot of traffic over years. Content is more important than the design which supports it.
Users don’t read, they scan. Analyzing a web-page, users search for some fixed points or anchors which would guide them through the content of the page.

Web users are impatient and insist on instant gratification.Very simple principle: If a web-site isn’t able to meet users’ expectations, then designer failed to get his job done properly and the company loses money. The higher is the cognitive load and the less intuitive is the navigation, the more willing are users to leave the web-site and search for alternatives. [JN / DWU]
Users don’t make optimal choices. Users don’t search for the quickest way to find the information they’re looking for. Neither do they scan web-page in a linear fashion, going sequentially from one site section to another one. Instead users satisfice; they choose the first reasonable option. As soon as they find a link that seems like it might lead to the goal, there is a very good chance that it will be immediately clicked. Optimizing is hard, and it takes a long time. Satisficing is more efficient.

Users follow their intuition. In most cases users muddle through instead of reading the information a designer has provided. According to Steve Krug, the basic reason for that is that users don’t care. “If we find something that works, we stick to it. It doesn’t matter to us if we understand how things work, as long as we can use them. If your audience is going to act like you’re designing billboard, then design great billboards.”
Users want to have control. Users want to be able to control their browser and rely on the consistent data presentation throughout the site. E.g. they don’t want new windows popping up unexpectedly and they want to be able to get back with a “Back”-button to the site they’ve been before: therefore it’s a good practice to never open links in new browser windows.

1. Don’t make users think

According to Krug’s first law of usability, the web-page should be obvious and self-explanatory. When you’re creating a site, your job is to get rid of thequestion marks — the decisions users need to make consciously, considering pros, cons and alternatives.

If the navigation and site architecture aren’t intuitive, the number of question marks grows and makes it harder for users to comprehend how the system works and how to get from point A to point B. A clear structure, moderate visual clues and easily recognizable links can help users to find their path to their aim.

Let’s take a look at an example. Beyondis.co.uk claims to be “beyond channels, beyond products, beyond distribution”. What does it mean? Since users tend to explore web-sites according to the “F”-pattern, these three statements would be the first elements users will see on the page once it is loaded.

Although the design itself is simple and intuitive, to understand what the page is about the user needs to search for the answer. This is what an unnecessary question mark is. It’s designer’s task to make sure that the number of question marks is close to 0. The visual explanation is placed on the right hand side. Just exchanging both blocks would increase usability.

ExpressionEngine uses the very same structure like Beyondis, but avoids unnecessary question marks. Furthermore, the slogan becomes functional as users are provided with options to try the service and download the free version.

By reducing cognitive load you make it easier for visitors to grasp the idea behind the system. Once you’ve achieved this, you can communicate why the system is useful and how users can benefit from it. People won’t use your web site if they can’t find their way around it.

2. Don’t squander users’ patience

In every project when you are going to offer your visitors some service or tool, try to keep your user requirements minimal. The less action is required from users to test a service, the more likely a random visitor is to actually try it out. First-time visitors are willing to play with the service, not filling long web forms for an account they might never use in the future. Let users explore the site and discover your services without forcing them into sharing private data. It’s not reasonable to force users to enter an email address to test the feature.

As Ryan Singer — the developer of the 37Signals team — states, users would probably be eager to provide an email address if they were asked for it afterthey’d seen the feature work, so they had some idea of what they were going to get in return.

Stikkit is a perfect example for a user-friendly service which requires almost nothing from the visitor which is unobtrusive and comforting. And that’s what you want your users to feel on your web site.

Apparently, Mite requires more. However the registration can be done in less than 30 seconds — as the form has horizontal orientation, the user doesn’t even need to scroll the page.

Ideally remove all barriers, don’t require subscriptions or registrations first. A user registration alone is enough of an impediment to user navigation to cut down on incoming traffic.

3. Manage to focus users’ attention

As web-sites provide both static and dynamic content, some aspects of the user interface attract attention more than others do. Obviously, images are more eye-catching than the text — just as the sentences marked as bold are more attractive than plain text.

The human eye is a highly non-linear device, and web-users can instantly recognize edges, patterns and motions. This is why video-based advertisements are extremely annoying and distracting, but from the marketing perspective they perfectly do the job of capturing users’ attention.

Humanized.com perfectly uses the principle of focus. The only element which is directly visible to the users is the word “free” which works attractive and appealing, but still calm and purely informative. Subtle hints provide users with enough information of how to find more about the “free” product.

Focusing users’ attention to specific areas of the site with a moderate use of visual elements can help your visitors to get from point A to point B without thinking of how it actually is supposed to be done. The less question marks visitors have, the better sense of orientation they have and the more trust they can develop towards the company the site represents. In other words: the less thinking needs to happen behind the scenes, the better is the user experience which is the aim of usability in the first place.

4. Strive for feature exposure

Modern web designs are usually criticized due to their approach of guiding users with visually appealing 1-2-3-done-steps, large buttons with visual effects etc. But from the design perspective these elements actually aren’t a bad thing. On the contrary, such guidelines are extremely effective as they lead the visitors through the site content in a very simple and user-friendly way.

Dibusoft.com combines visual appeal with clear site structure. The site has 9 main navigation options which are visible at the first glance. The choice of colors might be too light, though.

Letting the user see clearly what functions are available is a fundamental principle of successful user interface design. It doesn’t really matter how this is achieved. What matters is that the content is well-understood and visitors feel comfortable with the way they interact with the system.

5. Make use of effective writing

As the Web is different from print, it’s necessary to adjust the writing style to users’ preferences and browsing habits. Promotional writing won’t be read. Long text blocks without images and keywords marked in bold or italics will be skipped. Exaggerated language will be ignored.

Talk business. Avoid cute or clever names, marketing-induced names, company-specific names, and unfamiliar technical names. For instance, if you describe a service and want users to create an account, “sign up” is better than “start now!” which is again better than “explore our services”.

Eleven2.com gets directly to the point. No cute words, no exaggerated statements. Instead a price: just what visitors are looking for.

An optimal solution for effective writing is to

use short and concise phrases (come to the point as quickly as possible),
use scannable layout (categorize the content, use multiple heading levels, use visual elements and bulleted lists which break the flow of uniform text blocks),
use plain and objective language (a promotion doesn’t need to sound like advertisement; give your users some reasonable and objective reason why they should use your service or stay on your web-site)

6. Strive for simplicity

The “keep it simple”-principle (KIS) should be the primary goal of site design. Users are rarely on a site to enjoy the design; furthermore, in most cases they are looking for the information despite the design. Strive for simplicity instead of complexity.

Crcbus provides visitors with a clean and simple design. You may have no idea what the site is about as it is in Italian, however you can directly recognize the navigation, header, content area and the footer. Notice how even icons manage to communicate the information clearly. Once the icons are hovered, additional information is provided.

From the visitors’ point of view, the best site design is a pure text, without any advertisements or further content blocks matching exactly the query visitors used or the content they’ve been looking for. This is one of the reasons why a user-friendly print-version of web pages is essential for good user experience.

Finch clearly presents the information about the site and gives visitors a choice of options without overcrowding them with unnecessary content.

7. Don’t be afraid of the white space

Actually it’s really hard to overestimate the importance of white space. Not only does it help to reduce the cognitive load for the visitors, but it makes it possible to perceive the information presented on the screen. When a new visitor approaches a design layout, the first thing he/she tries to do is to scan the page and divide the content area into digestible pieces of information.

Complex structures are harder to read, scan, analyze and work with. If you have the choice between separating two design segments by a visible line or by some whitespace, it’s usually better to use the whitespace solution.Hierarchical structures reduce complexity (Simon’s Law): the better you manage to provide users with a sense of visual hierarchy, the easier your content will be to perceive.

White space is good. Cameron.io uses white space as a primary design element. The result is a well-scannable layout which gives the content a dominating position it deserves.

8. Communicate effectively with a “visible language”

In his papers on effective visual communication, Aaron Marcus states three fundamental principles involved in the use of the so-called “visible language” — the content users see on a screen.

Organize: provide the user with a clear and consistent conceptual structure. Consistency, screen layout, relationships and navigability are important concepts of organization. The same conventions and rules should be applied to all elements.
Economize: do the most with the least amount of cues and visual elements. Four major points to be considered: simplicity, clarity, distinctiveness, and emphasis. Simplicity includes only the elements that are most important for communication. Clarity: all components should be designed so their meaning is not ambiguous. Distinctiveness: the important properties of the necessary elements should be distinguishable. Emphasis: the most important elements should be easily perceived.
Communicate: match the presentation to the capabilities of the user. The user interface must keep in balance legibility, readability, typography, symbolism, multiple views, and color or texture in order to communicate successfully. Use max. 3 typefaces in a maximum of 3 point sizes — a maximum of 18 words or 50-80 characters per line of text.

9. Conventions are our friends

Conventional design of site elements doesn’t result in a boring web site. In fact, conventions are very useful as they reduce the learning curve, the need to figure out how things work. For instance, it would be a usability nightmare if all web-sites had different visual presentation of RSS-feeds. That’s not that different from our regular life where we tend to get used to basic principles of how we organize data (folders) or do shopping (placement of products).

With conventions you can gain users’ confidence, trust, reliability and prove your credibility. Follow users’ expectations — understand what they’re expecting from a site navigation, text structure, search placement etc. (see Nielsen’s Usability Alertbox for more information)

A typical example from usability sessions is to translate the page in Japanese (assuming your web users don’t know Japanese, e.g. with Babelfish) and provide your usability testers with a task to find something in the page of different language. If conventions are well-applied, users will be able to achieve a not-too-specific objective, even if they can’t understand a word of it.

Steve Krug suggests that it’s better to innovate only when you know you really have a better idea, but take advantages of conventions when you don’t.

10. Test early, test often

This so-called TETO-principle should be applied to every web design project as usability tests often provide crucial insights into significant problems and issues related to a given layout.

Test not too late, not too little and not for the wrong reasons. In the latter case it’s necessary to understand that most design decisions are local; that means that you can’t universally answer whether some layout is better than the other one as you need to analyze it from a very specific point of view (considering requirements, stakeholders, budget etc.).

Some important points to keep in mind:

according to Steve Krug, testing one user is 100% better than testing none and testing one user early in the project is better than testing 50 near the end. Accoring to Boehm’s first law, errors are most frequent during requirements and design activities and are the more expensive the later they are removed.
testing is an iterative process. That means that you design something, test it, fix it and then test it again. There might be problems which haven’t been found during the first round as users were practically blocked by other problems.
usability tests always produce useful results. Either you’ll be pointed to the problems you have or you’ll be pointed to the absence of major design flaws which is in both cases a useful insight for your project.
according to Weinberg’s law, a developer is unsuited to test his or her code. This holds for designers as well. After you’ve worked on a site for few weeks, you can’t observe it from a fresh perspective anymore. You know how it is built and therefore you know exactly how it works — you have the wisdom independent testers and visitors of your site wouldn’t have.

Bottom line: if you want a great site, you’ve got to test.

6.3 Richter Scale Earthquake Hit Italy

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rocked central Italy on Monday, seriously damanging some houses and causing a few structures to collapse in a mountainous region east of Rome, officials said.

Five children are said to be among the dead and at least 30 people remain unaccounted for as a massive search for the trapped is under way.

The 6.3-magnitude quake struck at 0330 (0130 GMT) close to L'Aquila city, 95km (60 miles) north-east of Rome.

A civil protection official said 3,000 to 10,000 buildings in the medieval city may have been damaged.

"This means that we'll have several thousand people to assist over the next few weeks and months," Agostino Miozzo told Sky Italia.

"Our goal is to give shelter to all by tonight."

A university dormitory, churches and a bell tower are believed to be among the buildings that had collapsed.

Residents and rescuers were using their bare hands to clear the debris from collapsed buildings. There were calls for quiet as they listened for signs of life amid the rubble.

Survivors, some still in their night clothes, hugged each other as they waited for news of friends and relatives.

Hundreds waited for treatment at the city's main hospital, where doctors were forced to treat people in the open air because only one operating room was functioning, Italian news agency Ansa reports.

The death toll has been rising steadily throughout the morning. The latest from Ansa is that 27 people are now dead.

But with many villages in the surrounding area still cut off by landslides, it is thought the full scale of the disaster will not become clear for many hours.

"We left as soon as we felt the first tremors," said Antonio D'Ostilio, 22, as he stood on a street in L'Aquila with a suitcase of clothes hastily piled together.

"We woke up all of a sudden and we immediately ran downstairs in our pyjamas," he was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

A student dormitory was said to be one of the buildings badly damaged. Rescuers were reportedly searching the rubble for people feared trapped inside.

One student told Rai state TV that he managed to escape the building before the roof collapsed.

Public safety chief Guido Bertolaso warned of "numerous victims, many injured and so many collapsed homes" as he travelled to the scene, Ansa news agency reported.

Correspondents say that L'Aquila, capital of the mountainous Abruzzo region, has many old buildings not built to withstand a strong earthquake.

Even some modern structures on the outskirts of the city were reported to have collapsed.

The earthquake was also felt in Rome, where the BBC correspondent said he was woken up by the shaking.

Italy lies on two fault lines and has been hit by powerful earthquakes in the past, mainly in the south of the country.

Today's earthquake in the Abruzzo region of Italy is likely to have been triggered by the north-south faultline that dissects the length of the country and trails the central and southern Apennines.

The fault is one of two criss-crossing the peninsula. The second, which runs from east to west across the centre of Italy, is typically associated with milder tremors.

Caught between two faultlines at the juncture of tectonic plate movements between Europe and Africa, Italy is prone to regular earthquakes.

However, it is unusual for the country to experience an eathquake as deadly as today's.

In 2002, a quake in the southern town of San Giuliano di Puglia killed more than 25 people – the highest number to die in an Italian earthquake in more than two decades. More than 40,000 people lost their homes.

In 1980, more than 2,700 people were killed and more than several thousand injured in a quake measuring at least 6.9 on the Richter scale.

The epicentre was at Eboli, about 80km (50 miles) south of Naples.

One of Italy's most deadly earthquakes struck a century ago in 1908, destroying the Sicilian town of Messina and, according to some estimates, killed as many as 100,000 people.
